Gerald McKevitt, SJ, a foremost expert on the Jesuits in the western United States, spoke on their history in San Francisco beginning with their arrival in 1863 up through the 1960’s.

Biography

Gerald McKevittis SJ, the author of Brokers of Culture: Italian Jesuits in the American West 1848-1919, published in 2007 by Stanford University Press. McKevitt is an expert on Jesuits in the western United States. He has written about Christopher Columbus, Jesuit higher education, 19th century Native Americans, and the history of Santa Clara University. He earned his doctorate from UCLA, his master’s from the University of Southern California, a BTS degree from Pontifical Gregorian University, and a bachelor’s degree from the University of San Francisco.
