Ignite!
 by Santos Bregaña
April 1 – May 20, 2018

Manresa Gallery is pleased to announce Ignite! – a brilliant project by the Navarrese artist, Santos Bregaña. He originally created the work in 2016 as Sancti Ignatius Ardens for the Horno de la Ciudadela de Pamplona, the Navarra capital. “Ignatius Ardens” translates as “Ignatius Burning.” We are fortunate to bring the installation to Manresa Gallery, housed inside St. Ignatius Church. This exhibit activates the gallery space as sacred by appealing to the senses through a reflective and intimate environment focused on the warmth and ardor that characterized the founder of the Jesuits.

Ignite! centers around an arrangement of five wax candles, each molded in the shape of the head of Ignatius. The life-size casts rest on metal stands accompanied by a series of texts poetically composed by Bregaña. They tell the story of Saint Ignatius through a creative language dovetailing human nature, heroic myth, and divine providence. To create the heads, Bregaña fabricated a silicon mold from the death mask of Ignatius that is preserved in Azpeitia, Spain.

Please join us as we connect the origins of the saint to the parish that honors his extraordinary life. The commitment of his journey will fascinate people of all ages.
