Professor Laura Hostetler, the EDS – Stewart Endowed Chair for the Study of Chinese-Western Cultural History (Ricci Institute) – will give a lecture, introducing the exhibition, Mapping “The East”: Envisioning Asia in the Age of Exploration. Dr. Hostetler is Professor of History at the University of Illinois, Chicago. Her research deals with imperial encounters and ethnography in modern Chinese History. Some of her publications include: Qing Colonial Enterprise: Ethnography and Cartography in Early Modern China (2001) and The Art of Ethnography: A Miao Album of Guizhon Province (2005).
